The Torment of Prometheus

The fresco is on the east wall of the Galleria della Cappella (Chapel Gallery) and is connected with the theme of Hercules defeating Cerberus, shown on the opposite wall. Both events were well known and were based on solid tradition and visual references. According to Greek mythology, Prometheus was punished by Zeus for stealing fire from the gods to give it to men. In the scene of the Torment, Prometheus is shown tied to the ground with chains, while a bird of prey tears at his liver.
