Details

Iacopo Robusti, known as Tintoretto (Venice, 1518–1594)
Portrait of a Lady with a Glove
oil on canvas,c. 1550
The Room of Time

Painted by the artist around 1550, this portrait of a young noblewoman in an elegant 16th-century dress of dark green velvet cut low over the bosom, which belongs to the oldest part of the collection, was placed in the Room of Time by Girolamo Ignazio Durazzo back in the first half of the 18th century. The composition is dominated by the subject’s imposing profile and the chromatic contrast between the light, gleaming flesh tones and the dark hues of the background and garment. The slight turn of the shoulders to the left is deftly balanced by the angle of the head facing in the opposite direction.
